The United States already has a Formula 1 track located in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas. In fact, the USA Grand Prix will be held there next month on October 24. But next year, F1 fans in the US will have another venue to watch the best drivers in the world compete.

After several years of speculation, F1 has officially announced that the Miami Grand Prix will run on May 8, 2022. Miami hasn't hosted an F1 race since 1959.

Like Monaco, the Miami GP will take place on a street circuit, mostly made using roads that average people can drive on. The circuit is dubbed the Miami International Autodrome, and measures 5.41 kilometers (3.36 miles). For comparison, F1's longest active track is Circuit de Spa-Francorchamp at 4.35 miles.

The circuit is positioned around Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins NFL franchise and several other sporting events. "We've worked hard to create a track with great racing and a venue with unparalleled fan experiences," said Tom Garfinkel, Miami Grand Prix Managing Partner. "There has been tremendous enthusiasm and anticipation for this event, and we're happy to be able to announce the date so that people can start planning for it."

"There is no doubt in my mind that the Formula 1 community and the sport's fanbase worldwide are going to be amazed by what they see next May," said Miami Grand Prix CEO Richard Cregan. "This location is already well known for creating unforgettable experiences for events like the Super Bowl and Miami Open. We look forward to embracing an entirely new global sporting occasion."

Work is already underway around the stadium to install elements of the track. "The circuit construction is progressing in line with expectations, and now that we have our date confirmed with Formula 1, we can rapidly follow up with revealing more of the detail of the experience that will be enjoyed at the trackside which will make this a truly stand-out addition to the calendar," Cregan added.

Commenting on the announcement, seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton said, "America is naturally such a big place. It always felt like we needed at least two races to integrate with the audience there. They are such great fans out there with a huge amount of passion." Perhaps Hamilton will drive his Mercedes-AMG to victory there next year.
