After much anticipation, the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX debuted last month. In the US, the new rally-inspired WRX is only available as a sedan. In Australia, however, you can also buy a more practical Sportswagon variant. Before you get too excited, Subaru has no plans to bring the new high-performance WRX wagon to the US. Essentially, the WRX Sportswagon is a rebadged version of the Levorg sold in Japan save for a more aggressive lower fascia and larger wheels.

Subaru Australia hasn't announced what lies under the hood, but it should pack the same 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder producing 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque as the American WRX Sedan.

Whereas the WRX Sedan is offered with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic Subaru Performance Transmission, the Sportswagon is only available with the automatic, which comes with paddle shifters. Power is of course sent to all four wheels via Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

Like the sedan, the WRX Sportswagon rides on Subaru's new Global Platform offering increased rigidity and improved cornering. Sharp-looking LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels are included as standard.

Inside, the WRX Sportswagon is equipped with an 11.6-inch touchscreen and sports bucket seats.

"The WRX Sportswagon offers Australians an additional version of this performance machine with enhanced practicality for everyday use," said Blair Read, General Manager of Subaru Australia. "The WRX Sportswagon will be a model in its own right, with both the sedan and Sportswagon featuring unique specification tailored to their respective audiences. We're confident the all-new WRX and WRX Sportswagon will continue to build upon the performance model's rich heritage as it ushers in a new era of style, technology, razor-sharp handling and exhilaration."

In Australia, sales for the 2022 Subaru WRX Sportswagon and Sedan kick off in Q2, 2022, but don't get your hopes up about it coming to America. It's a shame because it could have left the void left by the BMW M3 Touring that won't be sold in America either.
